SKN UK Tax & Business Update – 4 August 2026
Three important UK tax dates need attention in August 2026: HMRC's Self Assessment timely-payment consultation closes on 4 August, the first MTD quarterly update deadline follows on 7 August, and certain tax advisers face a registration deadline on 18 August.
Three UK tax deadlines accountants and business owners should know
The main action point today is that HMRC’s consultation on timely payment of Income Tax Self Assessment closes on 4 August 2026.
The first Making Tax Digital quarterly-update deadline follows on 7 August 2026, and certain tax advisers face an HMRC registration deadline on 18 August 2026.
No material new HM Treasury tax announcement, Companies House reform announcement or substantive Upper Tribunal tax judgment requiring immediate general SME action was identified overnight.
These updates are especially relevant for directors, landlords, sole traders, tax advisers, payroll teams and businesses using digital accounting software.
1. HMRC timely-payment consultation closes on 4 August 2026
HMRC’s Timely Payments in Income Tax Self Assessment consultation closes on 4 August 2026.
The consultation asks for views on collecting Self Assessment liabilities more regularly. One central proposal concerns taxpayers with sufficient PAYE income making payments towards forecast Self Assessment liabilities through PAYE from April 2029.
These are policy proposals, not enacted rules.
Why this matters
This could affect taxpayers who have employment income alongside other taxable income, including:
- company directors;
- employees with rental income;
- people with employment and self-employment income;
- taxpayers receiving dividends or other untaxed income;
- employers and payroll teams.
Regular payments may reduce large January and July tax bills, but they also raise practical questions.
Accountants and taxpayers will want clarity on:
- how forecast liabilities would be calculated;
- whether tax-code adjustments would become harder to explain;
- how fluctuating rental income, dividends and business profits would be handled;
- correction of overpayments and underpayments;
- additional payroll and client-communication work;
- the cash-flow effect of replacing larger payment dates with more regular deductions.
Practices with significant numbers of directors, landlords and employed individuals with untaxed income should consider whether the consultation affects their clients.
2. MTD quarterly update deadline: 7 August 2026
The first Making Tax Digital for Income Tax quarterly update deadline is 7 August 2026.
Making Tax Digital for Income Tax became mandatory from April 2026 for qualifying sole traders and landlords. For most affected taxpayers, the first quarterly period ran from 6 April to 5 July 2026. Taxpayers using calendar quarters generally report for 1 April to 30 June, but the same 7 August submission deadline applies.
The update must be transmitted through compatible software. Completing bookkeeping does not, by itself, mean the quarterly update has been filed.
Final MTD checks
Accountancy practices and taxpayers should confirm that:
- every mandated client has been identified;
- each separate business and property source is correctly included;
- digital records cover the full first quarter;
- software authorisation remains active;
- the submission has not been rejected;
- successful filing evidence has been retained;
- clients have not assumed their accountant filed automatically.
The quarterly update is not the final tax return. It is a digital summary of income and expenses for the reporting period.
3. Tax-adviser registration deadline: 18 August 2026
HMRC is introducing mandatory registration for tax advisers in stages.
Certain new advisers, and advisers who interact with HMRC without an Agent Services Account, Self Assessment account or Corporation Tax account, must register by 18 August 2026. HMRC says registration is free. Firms that already have an Agent Services Account generally do not need to register again at this stage.
Practice action points
Each practice should record:
- the legal entity providing tax advice;
- which HMRC accounts it currently holds;
- whether it has an Agent Services Account;
- whether associated firms or subcontractors require separate registration;
- which registration window applies;
- evidence that registration was submitted;
- any HMRC requests for further information.
Professional-body membership or an old agent code should not be assumed to satisfy the new statutory registration requirement.
Companies House watch
No new Companies House policy announcement requiring immediate action was identified overnight.
Identity verification remains the principal live reform. Existing directors generally verify in connection with the company’s next confirmation statement during the transition period, while persons with significant control have role-specific verification windows.
Businesses should maintain a company-by-company register of director and PSC verification status, personal-code submission status and upcoming confirmation-statement dates.
Tribunal watch
No new substantive Upper Tribunal tax decision requiring a general client briefing was identified overnight.
The recently listed Ketan Patel v HMRC matter concerns reconsideration of permission to appeal rather than a substantive determination of the underlying tax dispute. It should not be presented as establishing a new general tax principle.
Practical conclusion
The next two weeks contain several important compliance points:
- 4 August 2026: HMRC Self Assessment timely-payment consultation closes;
- 7 August 2026: first MTD quarterly update deadline;
- 18 August 2026: certain tax advisers must register under HMRC’s new rules.
Directors, landlords, sole traders, payroll teams and tax advisers should review their position now rather than waiting for a reminder.
