Does Filing Self Assessment Early Mean Paying Early?
Filing your 2025/26 Self Assessment early need not mean paying immediately. Check January deadlines, payments on account and PAYE options with SKN.
Does filing your Self Assessment tax return early mean you have to pay immediately? No: submitting your return ahead of the deadline does not itself bring forward the normal payment date. Preparing now can give you time to check the figures, understand the bill and organise the money before January.

What has HMRC said this week?
In its announcement published on 8 October 2026, HMRC encouraged customers to begin their 2025/26 returns well before January. It recommends gathering records, working in manageable stages and planning how to pay. This is a reminder about existing obligations, not a new tax or a changed filing deadline.
The message is useful for sole traders, landlords and individuals with income to report. Starting with the records does not commit you to submitting an incomplete return. It gives you a chance to resolve missing information before a deadline becomes urgent.
When are the 2025/26 filing and payment deadlines?
For an individual using the standard deadlines, HMRC must receive a paper return by 31 October 2026. The online filing deadline and normal payment deadline are 11:59pm on 31 January 2027. The return covers 6 April 2025 to 5 April 2026.
Check the official deadline guide and your own HMRC notices. Special arrangements apply to some returns, including certain partnership returns. The standard individual dates should not be used indiscriminately for every taxpayer.
Keep filing and payment as separate items in your diary. A completed return helps establish what is due; it is still sensible to confirm the amount outstanding and allow time for the payment method you choose.
Can I start now and finish later?
HMRC’s announcement explains that you can start your return, save it and return to it. A practical approach is to prepare one income source at a time, then review the whole return before submission.
As an organisational checklist, gather the records relevant to your circumstances: employment or pension information, business records, rental statements, interest and dividend details, and information about other transactions your accountant needs to review. Do not assume every item applies to you, or that every expense in your records is deductible.
If your accountant prepares the return, agree a date for supplying the information and identify outstanding documents. A short list stating what is missing, who will obtain it and when it is expected can be more useful than sending several unexplained attachments.
What if I missed the 5 October registration date?
If you need a 2025/26 return and are new to Self Assessment, or registered previously but did not need a 2024/25 return, the notification deadline was 5 October 2026. HMRC says late notification could result in a penalty. Check the registration service promptly rather than waiting until January.
HMRC’s deadline guide says late registrants receive a filing deadline three months from the date of its letter or email. The payment deadline remains 31 January 2027. Read the actual notice carefully and discuss any uncertainty with your adviser.
Could my January payment include payments on account?
Possibly. HMRC’s payments-on-account guidance explains that advance payments towards the next bill are normally due on 31 January and 31 July. Each is usually half the previous year’s tax.
They are not required if the previous year’s tax was less than £1,000, or more than 80% was paid outside Self Assessment. Your statement or online account shows whether they apply. A January amount can include a balancing payment and the first payment on account, so budget against the account balance rather than a single headline tax calculation.
Can tax be collected through my PAYE code?
This option has conditions. Under HMRC’s tax-code payment guidance, you must owe less than £3,000, already pay tax through PAYE, and meet the paper deadline or file online by 30 December 2026. Making a part payment to get below £3,000 does not qualify.
There must also be sufficient PAYE income. Collection cannot make tax exceed 50% of that income or more than double your normal tax deductions. Eligible amounts are collected over 12 months. Check suitability rather than assuming that filing before December guarantees acceptance.
Frequently asked questions
Does filing in October automatically require immediate payment?
No. Check your applicable payment deadline and outstanding balance.
Is saving an unfinished online return the same as filing?
No. Plan time to complete, review and submit it, and retain the submission confirmation.
Can I ignore a return request if I think no tax is due?
No. HMRC’s Self Assessment checker says to follow the deadline in a return request. If you believe a return is unnecessary, contact HMRC and explain.
Does Making Tax Digital replace my 2025/26 return?
No. HMRC’s 8 October announcement confirms that customers signed up to Making Tax Digital for Income Tax still need their Self Assessment return and payment by 31 January 2027.
